In the story it explains that it was a foggy morning. I can see the platoon sneaking through the woods with little to no visibility.

In this picture I see Kathleen as a little girl asking her father about the war, but he feels that she is too young to really understand the brutality of war. In the story O'Brien wishes to one day explain to his daughter that he did kill someone, but wants to wait till she is old enough to understand it.
